ShredBoard is an instrument that uses the conventional keyboard and mouse as input. The keys z-/, a-’, q-] and 1-= are mapped to the notes of four guitar strings starting at E, A, D, G for each row of keys. The mouse is mapped for use as an effects pedal. There are 2 effects – ChillZoid – a clean, ambient effect and MightySTOMP – a distorted synth effect. Parameters for each effect can be adjusted with 3 knobs to produce a variety of tones.

The software is an AIR application written in ActionScript 3. The sounds are produced in  SuperCollider by sending OSC messages via  flosc. The flosc AS3 classes were modified for certain OSC messages to work correctly with SuperCollider.

Transmutation: Abstraction is OS X application for live visual performance written in Processing. It has five configurable, audio reactive scenes with numerous parameters which can be manipulated in real-time. Frames from the application are streamed in real-time, via Syphon, into Resolume, where audio reactive, visual effects are used to further abstract the visual composition.

Nonlinear Division (nadir version) is an extract from live audiovisual performances with musician, Speak Onion, between 2012-2015, made with Processing. The music is choked with dense atmosphere, folding in on itself repeatedly, while the visuals are expansive, building outwards in every direction. The compound effect is a feeling of infinity: no beginning or end, no inside or outside, no familiar reference points. This causes a new and impressionistic experience of time – less a straight line and more an arc with ill-defined limits, which eventually feels just as familiar as it does new.

Transmutation is a custom audio visualization application created for Speak Onion’s live performance on 01/27/2012 @ The Charleston, NYC. It includes four audio reactive scenes, the parameters for which can be manipulated via a GUI in real-time, and splitscreen capability.

The application and source code can be downloaded from the github repository.

Parameters for each scene are mapped to logarithmically spaced averages retrieved from an FFT analysis of the input audio. These parameters include sensitivity, scale and position of elements in each scene, and can be tweaked in real-time using a GUI.

This project was coded using Processing. Some of the code is based on examples from Daniel Shiffman’s – The Nature of Code.

During my time at Parsons, I designed and developed the Open Society Foundations / Parsons Design Fellowships website with WordPress. I was part of a team of 4 developers.

The New York Times Newswire API is used to load news for the last 24 hours. The title and URL for the retrieved articles are used to search for tweets with the BackTweets API, a BackType service.

The articles are placed around the center arranged clockwise based on the time they were published. The tweets for each article emanate from the article near the center to the outside. These are based on the time difference between when the article was published and when it was tweeted. The 24 rings indicate the hour difference from 1 near the center to 24 near the outside.

This project was built with ActionScript 3, PHP, MySQL, XML. The data was harvested using the NY Timeswire API and backtweets API.

Data was collected between November 13, 2009 and February 9, 2010 via a cron job set up to pull and store the data locally. The current database is 107 MB, with 15,327 NYTimes articles and 311,885 tweets for those articles.

Hypnagogia is a term coined by Alfred Maury for the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep (i.e. the onset of sleep).

It’s possible to experience weird hallucinations during this state which is what the animation is built around.

Clips were generated by translating illustrations into sound. This was done by exporting the illustrations as PCX (from Photoshop) and importing them into Audacity as raw audio. This was then layered with environmental sounds and sound generated with SuperCollider. The result was further manipulated by adding effects in Ableton Live.
